——— Backbiting (Speaking evil behind you about you) ———
Gheebah or backbiting means speaking about a Believer in his absence and saying things that he would not like to have spread around or mentioned. Buhtaan or slander means saying things about a Believer that are not true, or in other words telling lies about him. malicious gossip means telling one person what another said in order to cause trouble between them.
Even “Saying something about your brother that he dislikes. Is backbiting”“ Even if it is true
How Should we respond ?
“Whoever speaks evil about you behind your back, do not become angry for they are in reality giving you their good deeds on a golden plate” - (Imam
Hasan Al-Basri)
This is why when he (Imam Hasan) heard that a man backbite him, he sent him a gift (a dish of sweets). The man went to him asking him what was the occasion for sending him such gift… Imam Hasan Al Basri answered him :”you backbite me so the dish of sweets was a small gift to thank you for giving me from your good deeds”Q) One who listens to backbiting, is a backbiter ?
A) The one who listens and not stop nor to try refute the gossip* is backbiter (too).
Better to try stopping other (by defending the one who is being talked about) and to leave them if we cant stop them.
May God help us to guard our tongue and limbs from doing things which cause God wrath.
